Rumi Tile Workshop *April-San-Diego*
Join us over the last weekend in April to learn introductory marquetry and inlay skills! We’re going to cram this into a quick workshop and use a hand-powered saw (called a chevalet de marqueterie), packet-cutting method to cut once, and take home four Rumi-tile coasters. No previous experience required.
Rumi tiles use classic motifs found in much of the decorative arts history of Southwest Asia & North Africa. The geometric and floral designs are often perfectly symmetrical. This tile design is originally carved in stone and found at the Madrasa of Sarghatmish, a Mamluk era mosque from 14th century Egypt. The design was provided by award-winning Egyptian artist Noha El Qahwagy. (Find her @noha.elqahwagy)
This class will use the chevalet to cut these pieces in 2D and make four multi-colored versions in wood veneers! Be prepared for a mind-bending puzzle because we will assemble these on craft boards upside down using hide glue.
Dates:
April 26th, Saturday, 10-4
April 27th, Sunday, 10-2
Place: American School of French Marquetry
3815 Utah St.
San Diego, CA, 92104
**Class size will be limited to a max of six people.
Please send an email if you are interested in signing up for future workshops with ASFM. (kathryn@kathrynsullivanrestoration.com)
